Communication Skills for Families
The service has been run since 1997 in response to parents who wish to learn sign language in order to improve communication with their deaf child(ren). Sign Language and Deaf Awareness training are usually available as weekly evening classes and often this is unsuitable for parents.
This project brings Sign Language and Deaf Awareness into the family home.
The training is either on a one-to-one or on a group basis, depending on need.
The trained tutors are usually themselves deaf.
Referral to the project can be made through a Teacher of the Deaf/or Social Worker.
What the project does
- Trained deaf tutors will visit family homes to give communication skills training in sign language.
- Families with deaf children can request this service.
- We link closely with the Education Service (Teachers of the Deaf) and DeafVision Social Workers with Deaf People.
- We also provide bursaries for family member(s) to take the CACDP Level One British Sign Language skills course.
[ All requests for this service are subject to the availability of tutors and priority criteria]
